Thanks to the vision and financial clout of a Perth entrepreneur, the heritage trades program in the Eastern Ontario town could be saved, but it’s going to take some quick and creative action by the Doug Ford government.
When he heard about the campus closing in his hometown, Toby Shannan was surprised and saddened at what this loss would mean for Perth. He decided to put forward a pitch to keep the campus going in town. “I just thought ‘Hey, this is a community I love. It’s a space that I know there’s tons of potential here. I should probably step up and help,’” Shannan said.
In February, Algonquin College announced it is suspending 41 programs and closing its Perth campus. But, someone in the Perth community is hoping to save the closing campus. We’ll speak to Toby Shannan about his plans.
“The simple proposal is, I would like Algonquin College to keep the campus in town and I think the way to do it is to give it to a not-for-profit that I will set up,” Shannan said. Shannan envisions a governance structure of leaders from construction, academia, and local government.
Bill is joined by former Chief Operating Officer of Shopify, Toby Shannan, to talk about what he's doing to help continue operations at Algonquin College's Perth campus.
